Japanese Akita

The Japanese Akita dog breed is classified as a "Utility Dog" which is basically the classification for all dogs that don't fit into one of the dog breed categories: hounds, gundogs, terriers, working dogs, or toy dogs. Some prefer to say that a utility dog is one that is first and foremost enjoyed for it's companionship.

The Japanese Akita is a larger dog. The male stands between 26 and 28 inches tall while the female is 24 to 26 inches tall. They usually weigh around 110 pounds.

They are powerful dog with a bear like face. They have a head with a broad skull and a medium length muzzle. Their noses are black and they have small almond shaped brown eyes. Their coat can be of any color. See an example of an Akita dog in the picture below:

The Japanese Akita is a protective dog that while it is mostly reserved in behavior it also likes to dominate. An Akita requires firm controlling by it's owner. Learn more about training your Akita here.
