Check out these free puppy training tips from your friends here at Dog Training A to Z!
Remember that we recommend Sit Stay Fetch for all dog and puppy training! It's an incredibly thorough guide that will expertly lead you through every step of training your dog well!
It's great that you are here and you want to start training your puppy! There used to be some misinformation around that you should wait till your dog is older to start training them, nothing could be farther from the truth! You should start training your puppy as soon as possible! Some dogs like the American Eskimo for example do not learn very well as adults if they haven't been trained as puppies. So you don't want to wait around!
Free Puppy Training Tip #1
As soon as you first get your new puppy make sure that they learn that coming to you when you want them to come is a great thing. You have to be enthusiastic with your rewards! Make sure your puppy knows that coming to you when called is a great thing that he enjoys doing.
Free Puppy Training Tip #2
Puppies will naturally be jumping up on you a lot. The key to stopping this behavior is not through negative training (we don't believe in negative training of any type) but just by ignoring your puppy when he is jumping on you. You never give him reward when he jumps on you. You ignore him and act like he doesn't exist. Soon he will come to realize that jumping on you is a really bad idea! As soon as he's back down on the ground and no longer jumping on you then you give him a great pat on the head and much encouragement.
Free Puppy Training Tip #3
Make sure your puppy associates it's name with happy and fun things. Let's say your puppy's name is Spot. You should always say things like "Spot, it's dinner time!" and "Spot, it's time to play in the park!" but when you not happy with your dog it's best to not even use their name at all. Let's say Spot just peed on your new rug for example! Don't use his name at all. Speaking of peeing on the rug - Sit Stay Fetch also has a thorough house training section.
Good luck with these tips and know that you are on the right track by starting early with your dog!
